Highly detailed simulations of cardiac function have become feasible, but performing such simulations remains a highly non-trivial problem, as complex workflows have to be employed to build, parameterize and execute simulations. The main focus of the 4th openCARP User Meeting on Computational Modeling of Cardiac Electrophysiology (Sep 20-22, 2021 in Karlsruhe, Germany) is to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in modeling cardiac electrophysiology, and to introduce and provide basic training for solving cardiac electrophysiology problems using the freely available modeling environment openCARP.
Most of the program is split in two tracks. One aimed at newcomers to the field who want to learn the basics and one aimed at users who already have a bit of experience with openCARP and want to learn about more advanced features, exchange and share experiences, and contribute to advance openCARP.
Right after the the openCARP user meeeting, the Atrial Signals Workshop will take place in Karlsruhe from Sep 23-25. This workshop might be interesting for openCARP users working in the field of atrial simulations and you can consider submitting an abstract.
The openCARP User Meeting addresses researchers at all career levels (PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, senior scientists) in academia and industry with research interests in computational modeling of cardiac electrophysiology.
In addition to a beginner track with basic openCARP training, we will be holding a hackathon-style experienced track.
The workshop will start on 2pm on Monday, September 20 and will end at 2pm on Wednesday, September 22.
We will offer two tracks: a beginner's track and an advanced track. If you are familiar with the basic concepts of cardiac electrophysiology, we will acquaint you with the basics of openCARP. How to set it up, how follow the tutorials and how to design your own experiments using carputils. At the end, you should be able to set up a new cardiac electrophysiology simulation from scratch. The advanced track will be held in hackathon style where users with some experience in openCARP will tackle more advanced modeling problems and produce some new material for the community along the way.
All locations can be reached by foot within a few minutes as well as by tram. A 15 minute tram ride (get off at "Kronenplatz") will bring you to the user meeting venue from the train station. From the city center, it's not more than a 5-10 minute walk.

There are plenty of hotels around the city center. HRS is one of the platforms that lists most of them. Of course, there are also AirBnBs.
The closest commercial airport is Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport, served by a limited number of airlines. The best-connected major hub is Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) with an excellent railway connection that brings you from the airport to the center of Karlsruhe in just a little more than one hour. Upon arrival at FRA, follow the signs to the long-distance train station (Fernbahnhof). We recommend booking tickets in advanced – you can do so here by selecting "Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf" as Start and "Karlsruhe Hbf" as Destination. A one-way trip should cost approximately 38 Euro (excl. seat reservation).
Karlsruhe’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof, Hbf) is centrally located, and within 25 minutes walking distance or 10 minutes tram ride (S1/S4/S7/S8/S11/Tram 2, get off at "Kronenplatz") to the venue. Many hotels are within easy walking distance, and there are taxis in front of the station.
Parking within the city center is rather limited and expensive. If you should decide to bring your car, you may wish to pre-book a parking space at your hotel.
